“One of the hardest things in music is creating a sense of balance. An artist must fill the space between our ears, but must be careful not to crowd it. Few can do that like Ackryte. He’s given us expansive landscapes to walk through, carefully aligned still-lifes to mediate on, and snapshots of the seasons to savor. Fly Opus is definitely of the third order. Ackryte did not whip up an imaginary landscape for Fly Opus, he held a mirror to the world around us: the flourishing earth at its highest high. Fly Opus drips with the moisture in the air. It is rich with the sound of newly grown leaves singing in the wind. When I listened to Fly Opus I couldn’t help but take my eyes off my computer screen to admire the earth becoming lush again. Somehow every year when I look up and see the earth come alive just like it has every year before it, something feels distinctly new. It’s never the same, but undeniably familiar; immediate and momentary, but bursting with déjà vu. The earth cycles in inherent contradictions, and Ackryte works in them.
