“We Come From The Trees” is the debut solo release from Science Project’s Grimes. It explores a personal relationship with the rhythms of Eastern Indonesia through bass music. The album pieces bass, roots and tribal rhythms into a future/ancient sound, rich in archival field recordings from Buru island in the Maluku Province from which the term “Epkitan” originates. Clipped and dubbed out chants resonate through chopped up austronesian rhythms grounded by raw sub-bass and meditative chord progressions, painting an aural picture of the east Indonesian landscape on the frontal lobe. “We Come From The Trees” is a story, distinct of any other, told through a dub-wise gospel with a heart and spirit true to the meaning and origin of “Epkitan”.
