“I’ve been dealing with this kind of “wandering, endless” vibe lately. Kind of having that feeling of not knowing what your place in the world is or what you’re really supposed to be doing. I wanted the music of S U R F A C E to kind of reflect that wandering, searching spirit. There’s a definite “airy” almost “cold” kind of vibe to the music on this EP, although there are still moments of warmth, probably due to using both analog and digital gear. I wanted that to be kind of reflective of this sort of “drifting” feel, moments of certainty coupled with utter, chaotic doubt.
I formulated this whole loose narrative of someone ending up in this giant body of water drifting. “Breathe” sort of touches on the view from underneath the water looking up towards the surface and seeing lights. It starts with this kind of realization that you’re lost but then you find this kind of objective, a mark point that you try to reach, and a sense of urgency develops as you head for the surface for air. The song kind of reflects that process with a slow build followed by an upbeat ending. The loose narrative of the full-length ties in with this a little bit and we find that breaching the surface is just the beginning of what’s to come.”
