(Video) Mulatu Astatke / The Heliocentrics

The Heliocentrics – the London-based collective centered around drummer Malcolm Catto, bassist Jake Ferguson and producer Mike Burnham – first performed with legendary Ethiopian Jazz composer/arranger/pianist/vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke in early 2008. The pairing went so well – Astatke celebrated the band as the Heliocentrics performed the classic songs Astatke recorded for the Ethiopian Amha label in the late 60s and early 70s – that a collaborative recording session became a must. Thus began the landmark sessions in the Heliocentrics’ cavernous studio that resulted in Mulatu Astatke and The Heliocentrics: Inspiration Information 3.

(Audio) Fugees – The Score (Original Samples)

The Score is produced by a variety of producers including each member of the Fugees as well as Diamond D, Salaam Remi and Jerry ‘Wonder’ Duplessis. Although most tracks are built on sampled melodies, live instrumentation and DJing are incorporated into multiple tracks. Wyclef Jean plays the guitar on “Family Business,” while DJ Scribble scratches on “Manifest/Outro”. Still, samples are the predominant production tool on this album. “Fu-Gee-La” incorporates a sample of Teena Marie’s “Ooh La La La,” and it is interpolated in the song’s chorus. “Ready or Not” also contains a sample that is interpolated, “Ready or Not (Here I Come)” by The Delfonics.

(Audio) Cut Chemist – The Audience’s Listening

The debut album from Cut Chemist, formerly of pioneering underground hip-hop group Jurassic 5, The Audience’s Listening is evocative of an era when sound enthusiasts put out records for the adventure of it, not as a vehicle tied to hit singles and booty-shaking videos. Using a turntable, mixer and computer to create the songs, this gifted DJ has conjured an homage to what is possible. Varied, uplifting and unexpected, rooted in hip-hop but leaping into new sonic territory, The Audience’s Listening offers musical magic created by the alchemist known as Cut Chemist.
